Jahrhunderts in <strong>Narbonne<\/strong> (Frankreich) geboren (obwohl einige Autoren ihn in Mailand ansiedeln) und stammte aus einer Milit\u00e4rfamilie. Er wurde Hauptmann des <strong>ersten Hofes der Pr\u00e4torianergarde<\/strong>, eine Position, die nur von illustren Menschen bekleidet wurde. Sein Engagement brachte ihm das Lob aller seiner Kollegen und insbesondere des Kaisers Maximian (250-310) ein; zu dieser Zeit wurde das R\u00f6mische Reich von zwei Kaisern regiert: im Osten von Diokletian und im Westen von Maximian.<\/p>\n<p>Sebastian besuchte, wann immer es seine Aufgaben erlaubten, gefangene Christen, half den Schw\u00e4chsten und Bed\u00fcrftigsten. Diese Arbeit war sehr gef\u00e4hrlich, da Maximian eine S\u00e4uberung von christlichen Elementen in seinen Truppen vornahm und alle christlichen Soldaten aus seiner Armee ausschloss. Schlie\u00dflich denunzierte ihn ein anderer Soldat beim Kaiser.<\/p>\n<p>Maximian f\u00fchlte sich verraten. Er rief ihn zu sich und zwang ihn, sich zu entscheiden, ob er Christ bleiben oder weiter in der Armee dienen wolle. Sebastian sagte, er wolle seinem Glauben nicht abschw\u00f6ren, und der Kaiser beschloss, ihn <strong>zu t\u00f6ten.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maximian w\u00e4hlte die besten Bogensch\u00fctzen aus, um sie zu erschie\u00dfen. Die Soldaten brachten ihn zum palatinischen Stadion, zogen ihn nackt aus und banden ihn an einen Baum. Ein Pfeilhagel ging auf ihn nieder und die Bogensch\u00fctzen lie\u00dfen ihn auf der Stelle sterben. Eine Christin namens Irene, die Frau des Castulus (eines zum Christentum konvertierten kaiserlichen Beamten), die Sebastians Rat zu sch\u00e4tzen wusste, kam mit einer Gruppe von Freunden zu Sebastians Folterung. Als die Soldaten abzogen, stellten sie fest, dass Sebastian noch lebte, und Irene nahm ihn mit in ihr Haus, wo sie seine Wunden verband. Der Leichnam wurde von den Christen, angef\u00fchrt von Irene und ihrer Magd Lucina, wiedergefunden. Sie begruben ihn in einem unterirdischen Friedhof an der <strong>Via Appia<\/strong>. Sein Grab wurde bald das Zentrum einer gro\u00dfen Krypta.<\/p>\n<p>Der Leichnam blieb bis <strong>826<\/strong> im Grab in der Krypta, bis <strong>Eugen II<\/strong>. ihn ausgraben und in den Vatikan bringen lie\u00df. Ein Teil seines K\u00f6rpers wurde der Kirche Saint Medard in Soissons (Frankreich) \u00fcbergeben. Man nimmt an, dass sein Kult bereits im 15. Jahrhundert begann. Das erste Zeugnis stammt von Mitte Januar 1440: ein Akt des <em>Gran i General Consell<\/em> (des h\u00f6chsten politisch-administrativen Vertretungsorgans), in dem der Antrag der Juraten und Delegierten der <em>part forana<\/em> festgehalten ist, den Tag des Heiligen zum Feiertag zu erkl\u00e4ren.<\/p>\n<p>Den Chroniken zufolge wurde Mallorca im Jahr 1523, zeitgleich mit dem Ende des Deutschen Reiches, von einer Pestepidemie heimgesucht. Diese war eine der schlimmsten, nicht wegen der Zahl der Opfer, sondern weil sie nicht einged\u00e4mmt werden konnte. Eines Tages kam <strong>Manuel Suriavisqui<\/strong>, Erzdiakon von San Juan de Rodas, in Palma an und trug einen Knochen aus dem Arm des Heiligen Sebastian bei sich.<\/p>\n<p>Mit der Ankunft der Reliquie wurden viele Pestkranke auf wundersame Weise geheilt, indem sie einfach zu dem Heiligen beteten. Dieses Wunder und der schwere Sturm, der Suriavisqui mehrmals daran hinderte, seine Reise fortzusetzen, wurden als Auftrag <strong>des g\u00f6ttlichen Willens<\/strong> interpretiert: Die Reliquie sollte hier bleiben, um die B\u00fcrger weiterhin zu sch\u00fctzen.<\/p>\n<p>Am 15. September 1523 wurde der Knochen feierlich dem Seu gestiftet. Im Jahr <strong>1541<\/strong> hatte er bereits einen Altar in der <em>Seu de Mallorca<\/em> und das Fest wurde zum d&#8217;Eloi erkl\u00e4rt (L\u00e4uten der Hauptglocke der Kirche) und am Nachmittag wurde vor seinem Altar eine Salve gesungen; im Gegenzug verpflichteten sich die Juraten der Stadt (F\u00f6rderer der Kapelle), jedes Jahr vier rote Kerzen und vier wei\u00dfe Kerzen zu spenden und vier Pfund an den Clavario der Seu zu zahlen.<\/p>\n<p>Die Verehrung des Heiligen Sebastian wuchs, und 1634 baten die Geschworenen darum, dass der Heilige Sebastian zum Schutzpatron und Besch\u00fctzer Palmas erkl\u00e4rt werden sollte, so dass der fr\u00fchere Schutzpatron von Palma,<strong> l&#8217;\u00c0ngel Custodi (Der Schutzengel)<\/strong>, seines Amtes enthoben wurde.
