What to See in Mallorca?

Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearic Islands, a jewel of the Mediterranean that hides a rich history, countless monuments, curiosities, legends and many activities to enjoy.

Discover the island of Mallorca with our official guides, experts in local history and culture.

Below are some ideas of activities on what to see and what to do in Mallorca.

Valldemossa

If you come to Mallorca, you cannot miss the charming village of Valldemossa, located in a unique natural setting and full of historical heritage. Built on an old Arab farmhouse, its origins date back more than nine centuries.

You will find ceramic tiles on its portal and façade that will guide you to the birthplace of Saint Catherine of Mallorca and patron saint of Valldemossa, Catalina Thomàs Gallard.

You can also visit the palace of King Sancho of Mallorca, which was later transformed into the Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa.

Inside, you can explore the former monks’ cells of the Carthusian order of Saint Bruno. From the 19th century onwards, these spaces were adapted into private residences that hosted some of the first foreign visitors to the island, such as Frédéric Chopin and his partner George Sand, as well as the famous Archduke Ludwig Salvator.

Sóller

Deià

In a privileged enclave of the Serra de Tramuntana, halfway between Valldemossa and Sóller, you will discover Deià. A magical place, surrounded by the Torrent de Racó and its beautiful stone streets.

Make your way to the parish church of Sant Joan Baptista, located next to the cemetery. Inside rest many painters, musicians and poets who lived in Deià and who arrived in the 1960s and 70s, such as the famous writer Robert Graves, whose house is now also a place of pilgrimage.

What truly makes this place special is its location at the highest point of the village, offering breathtaking views over the Mediterranean Sea.

If there is a sacred place for those who practice cycling, it is Sa Calobra. The road that leads to this destination is considered one of the most emblematic cycling routes in the world.

A demanding ascent of 9.5 km, featuring countless tight bends, challenges even the most experienced cyclists and inspires many others to push their personal limits.

A place to enjoy, provided it is not high season, with crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by immense mountains.

At its end lies the Torrent de Pareis, at its mouth, considered the deepest canyon in Europe. Numerous hikers follow the torrent route during the months of low rainfall.

Sa Calobra

Lluc Monastery

The Sanctuary of Lluc is a major pilgrimage centre in Mallorca, founded at the beginning of the 13th century, attracting pilgrims from all over the world. Its name, Lluc, comes from the Latin lucus, meaning “sacred forest”.

The Virgin of Lluc, patron saint of Mallorca, is linked to a legend that tells how the image of the Virgin emerged in the mountain while a shepherd boy was herding his sheep and goats.

Shortly after, the image was taken to the parish church of the village. However, the next day it mysteriously reappeared at the spot where the shepherd had found it. This was interpreted as a sign that the Virgin wished to remain there, and a small chapel was built on the exact place of the discovery.

Discover the municipality of Alcúdia, with more than 2,000 years of history, when the Roman consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus incorporated Mallorca into the Roman Republic in 123 BC, founding Palma and Pollentia.

During Muslim rule it was known as Al-Qudiya, and after the Christian conquest, during the reign of James II, the medieval walls that surround the historic centre were built.

You can stroll and admire the beauty of this “faithful city”, a title granted by King Charles I in 1523 for remaining loyal and not joining the Germanies revolt.

You can also enjoy an afternoon at the beach of Alcúdia, ideal for families, with a wide sandy area and pine trees providing shade. From the harbour, you can observe the lighthouse of Alcúdia, built in the 19th century.

Alcúdia

Pollença

Walking through the town of Pollença is a journey through more than ten centuries of history. It is said that its name was known as Al-Bullan during the Islamic period, and by the Romans as Pollentia, although the Roman city of Pollentia is actually located in the present-day municipality of Alcúdia.

The medieval town was founded in the year 1229, and from that period remain the Roman bridge, the parish church of Our Lady of the Angels, the Albercuix tower, among others.

You will also enjoy the beautiful landscape that surrounds this place, framed by high mountains, valleys, and a coastline that is considered the longest on the island of Mallorca.

Cape Formentor is a privileged and remote enclave, far from the most touristic areas of Mallorca, and has been a source of inspiration for many artists who have found here a true escape for their poems and paintings.

It is made up of cliffs over 100 metres high, from which you can enjoy spectacular views.

In addition to its viewpoints and stunning coves—such as Cala Formentor, Cala Figuera and Cala Murta—you should visit the Formentor Lighthouse and the Atalaya of Albercuix. We also recommend visiting nearby villages such as Pollença, Alcúdia or Deià.

Cape Formentor

Artà and the Caves

Completely removed from mass tourism routes, the municipality of Artà has preserved the traditions of a welcoming and typically Mediterranean village.

You will enjoy its cobbled streets, the Conqueror’s Square, and the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador. This medieval building from the 14th century was restored in the 18th century and is located on the summit of Puig de Sant Salvador, 509 metres above sea level. The views are spectacular.

Just 900 metres away, you will find the Talayotic settlement of Ses Païsses, one of the most important and best-preserved archaeological sites in the Balearic Islands.

Finally, in the coastal area about 12 km away, you can visit the impressive Caves of Artà.

If there is one market in Mallorca that you cannot miss, it is the market of Sineu. Every Wednesday from 8:00 to 13:30 you will find all kinds of products: fruit, vegetables, cheese, olive oil, wine, sobrasada and olives… as well as a unique feature—the sale of farm animals.

Beyond the market, Sineu has great historical significance, as it once housed one of the royal palaces of the independent Kingdom of Mallorca. Highlights include the manor houses of its historic centre, the parish church of Santa Maria de Sineu, and the many windmills that reflect the agricultural past of the village.

Sineu

Binissalem

In Binissalem, you can find traces of Talayotic, Roman and Islamic periods. These remains are reflected in its wells and streets (preserved in local toponymy).

Between the 18th and early 19th centuries, buildings were constructed that consolidated the village as a historic ensemble (declared in 1983), such as Can Morell, Can Sabater, Can Garover, Can Antic, Can Novell, Can Cometa, and Can Tiro de Son Bolec.

Considered the capital of the wine-growing region, it was the first area to receive the DO (Denominación de Origen) in 1991. It is an ideal place to taste local wines in its different wineries.
