Christmas in Mallorca

The Christmas holidays in Mallorca offer a unique experience, full of warmth and charm, combining cultural traditions, exquisite gastronomy and festive spirit. The period begins with the dazzling inauguration of the Christmas lights in the capital at the end of November, filling the streets with Christmas markets with a variety of handcrafted gifts ideal for the season. Here are some of the most important events and information to help you make the most of the festive season:

ACTIVITIES & EVENTS

On the days around the winter solstice, the monumental Cathedral of Mallorca is filled with magic. In the morning, the sun streams through the main rose window, known as the “eye of the Gothic”, from the east, projecting unique colours onto the east rose window on the main façade. This event is especially visible from the Baluarte de San Pere. These dates are ideal for visiting both the cathedral and the island’s churches and marvelling at the traditional decoration of neules (snowflakes traditionally made with white flour paste, nowadays made of paper).

In addition, during the day, the island’s mild climate allows the whole family to enjoy outdoor activities, such as excursions in the mountains or walks on the beach, and to appreciate the play of colours of the beautiful sunsets by the sea.

In the evenings, the magic of the season turns the streets into a luminous stage. Family strolls among the markets, laughter and joy are palpable in every corner. Don’t miss special events that intensify the Christmas magic, such as the route of the nativity scenes, the skating rink, and shows such as Fesjaja, where laughter is guaranteed.

CHRISTMAS GASTRONOMY

During the colder months, families gather to celebrate the traditions of the slaughter and make delicious local sausages such as sobrasada or camaiot. For those interested in discovering more about this ancestral process, the Feria de las Matanzas in Sineu offers related activities, a market of local products and much more.

At this time of year, it is typical to savour the delicious buñuelos de viento available at the street markets, enjoy churros with chocolate at the “Xurreria Rosaleda”, or taste the delicious ensaïmada of Mallorca, perfect for any time of the year.

The Christmas table in Mallorca is a feast of unique flavours, including a variety of hors d’oeuvres, Christmas soup (with galets stuffed with minced meat), rostit de xot (roast lamb), porcella rostida (roast suckling pig) and the delicious almond nougat.

DATES & TRADITIONS

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Christmas Eve and Christmas in Mallorca are an intimate, family celebration and the tables are filled with delicious local delicacies. Christmas Eve dinner is followed by the traditional “missa del gall”, with a tradition unique to Mallorca: the Canto de la Sibila, a moving piece of music performed at midnight mass. This ancient song, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, evokes a sacred atmosphere, immersing the community in the spirituality of the season.

The 26th of December, known as the feast of Sant Esteve in Mallorca, is popularly known as “la segunda festa de nadal” (the second Christmas party) and shops are closed. The tradition behind this festivity dates back to ancient times, when it was practical to have enough time to walk back from the rural areas, where the festivities were celebrated, to the homes of each family member.

The expression: “Per Nadal, cada ovella al seu corral; per Sant Esteve, cada ovella a casa seva” (For Christmas, each sheep to its fold; for Sant Esteve, each sheep to its home) sums up the need to return home after the Christmas celebration, emphasising the importance of family reunion on this special date.

New Year's Eve and New Year

On the eve of the new year, Mallorca celebrates another peculiar festivity known as La Fiesta del Estandarte. During this event, the inhabitants dress up in traditional costumes, providing an authentic touch to the celebration and participate in processions that pay homage to a crucial historical moment: the Conquest of Mallorca by James I in 1229.

This episode marked a milestone in the shaping of Mallorcan identity and left a deep imprint on the island’s culture. The streets come alive with colourful parades of giants, musicians and theatrical performances that evoke Mallorca’s rich history, creating a joyful atmosphere that unites the population in celebration of our heritage.

The last night of the year is celebrated with a mix of tradition and modernity. Family and friends dinners are followed by the chimes in Plaça Cort, where locals and visitors welcome in the new year with fireworks and live music.

The New Year in Mallorca is experienced as a time to enjoy with the family. Many choose to organise family meals or outings to the countryside to breathe fresh air and start the year with positive energy. Some residents and visitors take advantage of the magic of our beaches to symbolically dive into the sea to symbolise a rebirth and renewal for the year ahead and to start the new year in a healthy and revitalising way.

The night of the three Wise Men

The eve of Three Kings’ Day brings with it the magical Three Kings’ Day Parade: Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar disembark at different ports in Mallorca and go through the streets throwing sweets to the children while the crowds enjoy the music and the colourful floats. An unforgettable experience for young and old alike.

Three Kings Day is the culmination of the festivities. The morning begins with the opening of gifts, followed by the traditional “roscón de reyes” (sweet festive bread in the shape of a ring, decorated with candied fruit). The streets are filled with laughter and joy as families share this day.
