BLOWING GLASS: Magic in every piece
The ancient art of glassblowing requires remarkable skill on the part of the artisan to create exclusive pieces with magical shapes, as it is practically impossible to reproduce two identical ones. The history of glassblowing in Mallorca dates back to Phoenician and Roman times in the Balearic Islands, when the first furnaces were established, although few pieces from this period have survived to the present day. It was not until the 18th century that design and technique from Venice elevated Mallorcan glass to its maximum splendour.
You can enjoy the spectacular creation of these pieces by visiting Fábricas Gordiola, a family with more than 300 years of history linked to the art of glass, whose traditional creation process has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. You can also explore the more contemporary Fábricas de Lafiore and the various local shops with blown glass products ranging from table glassware to lamps and other decorative items.
JEWELS AND PEARLS: Elegance and distinction
Palma’s jewellery tradition is concentrated in the old Jewish Quarter (Call Menor), where the Jewish community and their converted descendants traditionally dedicated themselves to the manufacture and trade of jewellery. Among the most outstanding pieces are the silver or gold works, such as the Mallorcan cross (Greek cross framed in a rhombus) and the hoop bracelets, plain or braided.
On the other hand, Mallorcan pearls have become a symbol of elegance and femininity. Their manufacture was introduced by a German businessman at the end of the 19th century in the town of Manacor. Made with organic materials, they are of high quality and inspired by natural pearls. The Mallorca pearl catalogue has more than 10,000 models, ranging from classic necklaces to youthful articles and accessories.
MALLORCAN FABRIC: Mediterranean Essence
Textile activity in Mallorca has been one of the most important trades on the island. Its evolution is largely due to the materials used. Initially, wool was used and over time linen and cotton were introduced. In the 19th century, like many other craft products, it underwent a process of industrialisation. In Sóller alone there were as many as 14 factories, although only one is still active today.
The roba de llengos is still an example of the island’s textile tradition, made using the technique known as Ikat. Originally from the Middle East, this technique has more than 2,000 years of history, although it was introduced to Mallorca in the 17th century along the silk route and since then it has acquired its own Mediterranean-influenced characteristics. This design is part of every Mallorcan home, being used in the form of tablecloths, curtains, cushions, as well as in clothing, bags and footwear.
Nowadays, there are many imitation products on the market, but you can distinguish the originals because they are printed on both sides.
MALLORQUÍN FOOTWEAR: Tradition and Avant-Garde
The strong tradition of craftsmanship in the manufacture of leather products and footwear became one of the main industries during the 18th and 19th centuries, driven by colonial exports. From the 20th century onwards, the concentration of the industry focused mainly on Inca, where factories experienced a significant degree of mechanisation. Despite facing several crises in the sector, Mallorcan footwear has managed to re-emerge as a symbol of creativity and quality.
From the prestigious international brand Camper, to shoes of humble origins destined for the rural population, such as the abarcas, porqueras and espadrilles, produced today with a wide diversity of designs and colours, they have become a symbol of the avant-garde, becoming the choice of clothing among the local population and conquering hearts all over the world.
OTHER PRODUCTS: Ancestral Crafts
The art of weaving vegetable fibres is one of the oldest handicrafts in the world. Chairs, carpets, hats and especially senalles (baskets) are part of the everyday products of the Mallorcan people. Mainly the local palm heart (which is characterised by its whitish colour) is used, although other fibres such as wicker and esparto grass are also used.
The masterful carving of olive wood by Mallorcan craftsmen is another treasure of the island. From kitchen utensils to decorative objects, olive wood reflects Mallorca’s connection to nature and sustainability.
The production of pottery continues to maintain its tradition in the municipality of Marratxí, where you can discover the Mud Museum located in an old flour mill. In this municipality a unique reddish-coloured clay is obtained that is unique on the island. The creation of clay pieces in Mallorca includes kitchen and decorative elements, among which the genuine siurells (figurines with whistles painted in white and brushstrokes in red and green) stand out. Our favourite souvenir of Mallorca for children and adults!
